Being a Marvel comic book geek when I was a child and being a child of the 80's gives me an interesting and skewed perspective on GI JOE. I remember how much I enjoyed the comics and how all you wanted to do was see Storm Shadow and Snake eyes fight. I also had "Action Force" toys, which is what JOE's were called this side of the Atlantic. Cobra would battle my Scarlet and Flint until snake eyes jumped out of a helicopter and killed everyone, including my Star Wars storm troopers. I had a fun childhood. Big budget bigger cast, I went in expecting to be terribly disappointed. Surely this couldn't be another excellent transformers style comeback? As the convoy is ambushed at the start although the action is fun and the character development starts straight away I was absolutely horrified at the CGI, and how ineptly it was thrown together. It looked completely unbelievable and to be honest, stupid. The animation in the Clone wars cartoons is much more lifelike for example and that's supposed to be a cartoon. However, I have to be honest and say, after a while although annoying it doesn't take too much away from the films enjoyment and its clearly (well hopefully) a visual style they were going for to set it apart as a kind of cartoon style. The writers were clearly given a free licence with regards the story, giving the baroness a history with Duke, and developing early on a relationship between Scarlet and Ripcord, while giving strength to characters who aren't key figures historically like Zartan, which I felt added a depth and a thirst for more knowledge about the Cobras and JOE's. Ironically, If I had a slight gripe with the story its that they revealed too much in the two hours, for example turning the baroness from Cobra to JOE and the entire history of Storm Shadow and Snake eyes revealed, then one of their deaths which I had never seen or thought of before. Those characters have always been eternal. Worse still, it makes you think that this could have been made as a single entity without hope of sequel, which would be a real shame. Rachel Nichols and Sienna Miller stole the show for me, but Dennis Quaid also gave a good account. I really enjoyed this as an action movie in spite of its obvious faults, it had the same heart and energy as JJ's Star Trek and was almost as enjoyable. Roll on the sequel, and more of the same!
